Dear CATs,
First up, I want to take a moment to talk about whatâs been happening in the US recently. This entire year has forced the world to look at injustices around the globe. The killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd have been horrible examples of racism, police violence and the broken systems we live in. Things need to change for the better. Oppressive systems need to be dismantled if we want to achieve justice and further on climate justice. Because solutions to the climate crisis that arenât intersectional arenât solutions.Things you can do: * Acknowledge and learn about how society has affected how you view the world & your own racism. Check your unconscious bias in this Harvard implicit association test (https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/takeatest.html) . * Listen and learn. Google things. Read Me and white supremacy (https://www.meandwhitesupremacybook.com/) or Why I no longer talk to white people about race (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/may/30/why-im-no-longer-talking-to-white-people-about-race) and add more books by Black authors to your reading list in general. I also really like the Yikes podcast (https://open.spotify.com/show/5rt2DC1hDOsMgW3P2Uxdan?si=epp-7nZPTu-2MX6nEZzo1w) (highly recommend ep 4 and 6). * Talk about racism and more importantly call people out on their racism â online, on your social media, with your colleagues, at the dinner table with family and friends. Silence is violence. It is essential to speak up â especially if you find yourself in a position of privilege. * Give your money/time/power to create safer spaces & opportunities for others. Amplify voices of people whoâd otherwise go unheard. Donate to the Minnesota Freedom Fund (https://minnesotafreedomfund.org/donate) , George Floyd Memorial Fund (https://www.gofundme.com/f/georgefloyd) , Black Visions Collective (https://www.blackvisionsmn.org/) and get informed about local organisations that work on battling racism, social inequalities and injustices.
Now for more CAT news: 1. Our first CAT Salon is happening tomorrow! Weâll be talking about Changing culture â collaboration & activism in the workplace. You can still sign up here (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdhA4zHMgn-A_RK_uRc74jrBjTZuUBpy-19g-IxQKd3_NmQFQ/viewform) and join the conversation in #proj-cat-salon (https://climate-tech.slack.com/archives/C0144BR1CSX) 2. A lot of the organisations we work in arenât quite as sustainable as weâd want them to be. And there isnât a clear way to talk about it (e.g. the relationships of Big Tech & Big Oil and how we feel about this as employees). Weâve been thinking about what itâd be like to use memes to express the dissonances we might be feeling. Join #d-cat-memes (https://climate-tech.slack.com/archives/C014JP39LJ1) for more. 3. Today we welcome another bunch of new CATs to the community! Iâve just sent a Slack invite to the new joiners, so if you have a moment, please say hi when they share an introduction in #introductions (https://climate-tech.slack.com/archives/CD4MB738S) , to make them feel welcome.

Sustainability in Software Engineering (https://medium.com/@dubrie/sustainability-in-software-engineering-702a70216b98) Software engineering has evolved a lot over the years as new capabilities are discovered and new information introduced. We are quickly approaching another inflection point that introduces a third dimension to the software engineering field: Sustainable Engineering.
We found 2ËC of warming will push most tropical rainforests above their safe ‘heat threshold’ (https://theconversation.com/we-found-2-c-of-warming-will-push-most-tropical-rainforests-above-their-safe-heat-threshold-139071) Massive study looked at more than half a million trees in 813 forests across the tropics.

A Battery Breakthrough Could End Lithium-Ionâs Reign (https://onezero.medium.com/a-battery-breakthrough-could-end-lithium-ions-reign-9aac17fc2562) Chances are, if you own a smartphone or laptop, much of your life revolves around a lithium-ion battery. Itâs just as likely that you know about this batteryâs downsides: It eventually stops holding a charge, lithium is scarce and mining it is horrible for the environment, and sometimes, it blows up. And yet, the vast majority of consumer electronics and clean energy storage devices rely on lithium-ion batteries because right now, thereâs no better alternative.
Tyre particles reach rivers and ocean (https://deframedia.blog.gov.uk/2020/05/28/tyre-particles-reach-rivers-and-ocean/) Today we look at coverage of a new Defra funded report that reveals tyres are a major source of microplastics found in the marine environment.
An Empire State of Green (https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/climate-solutions/empire-state-building-emissions/) New Yorkâs most famous skyscraper shrank its planet-warming emissions by 40 percent. Can the rest of the city do the same?
Episode 4 - Energy (https://jonandthefuturenauts.podbean.com/e/episode-4-energy/) It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. Humanity stands at a crossroads. The mighty forces of progress have lifted billions out of poverty. Energy has lit and warmed (or cooled) our homes and powered us overland, sea and into the air. We grow enough food to feed 10 billion people. And for the first time ever in history the internet is poised to connect every single person on the planet. Together. As one. What could possibly go wrong?
