Hello CATs!
How are you all doing in this time of social distancing? In case you need some inspiration for what to do, some of our members have put together this useful doc (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RDq2_Z8FfI_H6pAATuP-gCv0qDRdiOeFTYShgND6bXM/edit#) with ideas on how to spend your time. Weâve also recently uploaded some recordings of our last meet-up in London (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbGj6AM6oTSxqBlhMQlaplw) to our YouTube channel. And @Gillian Benjamin (https://climate-tech.slack.com/team/UV4GLTS7R) shared this message with podcast links (https://climate-tech.slack.com/archives/C4J8RQ2J3/p1584710878235200) for all of us. Oh! And why not start planning something for Earth Day in April? We have a #d-earth-week (https://climate-tech.slack.com/archives/CT3E44K6D) channel where you can share ideas or start discussions.
Remember you can unsubscribe (|UNSUB|) from this newsletter at any time.
Have a great week!

It’s not directly related to climate change, Hyfe is like Waze for public health. They are building a solution that uses AI to crowdsource symptoms to accurately map COVID-19.

Binge-Watching In CoronaVirus Lockdown Could Increase Emissions (https://www.forbes.com/sites/davekeating/2020/03/16/binge-watching-in-coronavirus-lockdown-could-increase-emissions/#26c2e754708f) As Coronavirus lockdowns spread from Italy to the rest of Europe, and look poised to be enacted in U.S. states, the advice has been âstay home and watch Netflixâ. But according to a report from energy comparison site SaveonEnergy, such mass binge-watching could result in a lot of carbon emissions. Overall itâs expected that the decrease in economic activity as a result of the Coronavirus restrictions will result in a steep drop in carbon emissions in the short term. Emissions in China are estimated to have dropped by 20% as a result of factory shutdowns and driving bans.
Study: global banks ‘failing miserably’ on climate crisis by funneling trillions into fossil fuels (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/mar/18/global-banks-climate-crisis-finance-fossil-fuels) The worldâs largest investment banks have funnelled more than £2.2tn ($2.66tn) into fossil fuels since the Paris agreement, new figures show, prompting warnings they are failing to respond to the climate crisis. The US bank JP Morgan Chase, whose economists warned that the climate crisis threatens the survival of humanity last month, has been the largest financier of fossil fuels in the four years since the agreement, providing over £220bn of financial services to extract oil, gas and coal.
The Good Times for Airlines Are Over (https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2020-03-17/the-good-times-for-airlines-are-over) Letâs imagine that you are the chief executive officer of American Airlines Group Inc., it is the beginning of 2014, and you can see the future. You know that you will have a great few years. You just emerged from bankruptcy at the end of 2013, but now you will have six straight years of positive net income, totaling about $17.5 billion. The airline industry will become so lucrative that people will write papers arguing that airlines collude to keep prices high.
COVID-19 reduces economic activity, which reduces pollution, which saves lives. (http://www.g-feed.com/2020/03/covid-19-reduces-economic-activity.html) COVID-19 is a massive global economic and health challenge, having caused >3500 global deaths as of this writing (Mar 8) and untold economic and social disruption. This disruption is only likely to increase in coming days in regions where the epidemic is just beginning. Strangely, this disruption could also have unexpected health benefits – and these benefits could be quite large in certain parts of the world. Below I calculate that the reductions in air pollution in China caused by this economic disruption likely saved twenty times more lives in China than have currently been lost directly due to infection with the virus in that country.
Elizabeth Warren just laid out 8 conditions that companies should accept for government bailout money during the coronavirus crisis (https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/warren-laid-out-conditions-companies-accept-bailouts-coronavirus-crisis-2020-3-1029006340) Warren unveiled eight conditions on Monday for companies that accept emergency federal funding during the coronavirus crisis.
Democrats are attacking the proposed $50 billion in federal assistance for airlines as a bailout, given the industry has directed massive profits toward stock buybacks. “Let me be clear: We’re not doing no-strings-attached bailouts that enrich shareholders or pay CEO bonuses. Period,” Warren said on Twitter. Some of Warren’s conditions included barring stock buybacks, giving workers a seat on the company’s board of directors, and banning executive bonuses.
INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES UNDER WATER IN THE AMAZON organized by Nina Gualinga (https://www.gofundme.com/f/indigenous-communities-flooding-amazon) CORONAVIRUS AND CLIMATECRISIS - THOUSANDS OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLE IN URGENT NEED AFTER EXTREME FLOODS As indigenous people in the Ecuadorian Amazon fight to prevent the spread of COVID-19 into their territories, extreme floods on the Bobonaza river have caused bridges to collapse, flooded homes and food gardens threatening the livelihood of thousands of people. This is the worst flood in recent history, caused by deforestation and climate change. This is the Climate Crisis!
Yuval Noah Harari: the world after coronavirus | Financial Times (http://archive.is/mGB55) Humankind is now facing a global crisis. Perhaps the biggest crisis of our generation. The decisions people and governments take in the next few weeks will probably shape the world for years to come. They will shape not just our healthcare systems but also our economy, politics and culture. We must act quickly and decisively. We should also take into account the long-term consequences of our actions. When choosing between alternatives, we should ask ourselves not only how to overcome the immediate threat, but also what kind of world we will inhabit once the storm passes. Yes, the storm will pass, humankind will survive, most of us will still be alive â but we will inhabit a different world.
