The Carbon Copy: Top US securities regulator proposes a historic climate disclosure rule (https://www.canarymedia.com/podcasts/the-carbon-copy/top-us-securities-regulator-proposes-a-historic-climate-disclosure-rule) How the SECâs new rules could change corporate accountability in America.

But since the show debuted in early 2019, its production team has evolved and so has our approach to discussing the latest in climate news.
- The Future is Intersectional with Leah Thomas (https://outrageandoptimism.libsyn.com/148-the-future-is-intersectional-with-leah-thomas) This week, we reject our flawed, siloed thinking and embrace the oneness of social justice and environmentalism as a singular, inclusive movement.
In the Summer of 2020, our guest, Leah Thomas, coined the term âIntersectional Environmentalismâ with a graphic she shared to Instagram that read, âEnvironmentalists For Black Lives Matterâ as a call out to all environmentalists to stand in solidarity with BIPOC communities that face compounding social and environmental injustices daily. The Instagram post went viral, and the pledge she introduced along with it, The IE Pledge, has reached over a million people.
The Catalyst with Shayle Khan - Will todayâs booming carbon market be able to avoid a bust? (https://www.canarymedia.com/podcasts/catalyst-with-shayle-kann/will-this-carbon-market-boom-be-different) Shayle Kann talks with Nat Bullard about emerging CO2 technology, rising demand and a new focus on removal. For those new to the subject, this explains the relative size of different markets along with, how different approaches address issues of volume, reliability and trust.
CAN WE GET CLEAN ENERGY WITHOUT DIRTY MINES? (https://www.climateone.org/audio/can-we-get-clean-energy-without-dirty-mines) In 2021, global sales of electric vehicles more than doubled. This year, automakers are projected to make another huge gain, driven by soaring gas prices and new models with increased range. Getting away from gas-powered vehicles is essential to transition to a clean energy economy. But itâs not all good news on the clean energy front. Russiaâs invasion of Ukraine has disrupted global supply chains, and roiled markets for nickel and other commodities used for renewables and batteries.
Environment Variables - Amazon’s Customer Carbon Footprint Tool (https://podcast.greensoftware.foundation/e/qn0j6k9n-amazon-s-customer-carbon-footprint-tool) In this episode Asim is joined by guests Chris Adams, Sara Bergman and Danielle Erickson and they discuss the impact that Amazonâs Customer Carbon Footprint Tool is having on the green software landscape.

The Technical Summary Kinda Slaps (IPCC Mitigation Report, Part 2) (https://www.drilledpodcast.com/the-technical-summary-kinda-slaps-ipcc-mitigation-report-part-2/) In the new IPCC Mitigation report there’s some quietly radical ideas inside it, and Amy Westervelt has been covering them for 20, and part two is one of the most accessible summaries we could find.
Private Report Shows How Amazon Drastically Undercounts Its Carbon Footprint (https://revealnews.org/article/private-report-shows-how-amazon-drastically-undercounts-its-carbon-footprint/) For those looking at racking carbon emissions, this is an eye opening piece how Amazon’s corporate emissions, end up being so much wildly lower than other comparable companies .

Hey CATs,
Today is international womens day, and if you follow climate, it’s worth knowing the pivotal role women have played and continue to play in the struggle to address the climate crisis. Eunice Foot (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eunice_Newton_Foote) was the first scientist to write about what we now know as the greenhouse effect, back in 1856. Christiana Figueres (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christiana_Figueres) was arguably the key architect of getting 195 countries to agree to the Paris Agreement in 2015. The #climatewomen (https://twitter.com/hashtag/ClimateWomen) hashtag on twitter today is a worth a look, and this thread from (https://twitter.com/KA_Nicholas/status/1501124825342955521) Prof. Kimberley Nicholas (https://twitter.com/KA_Nicholas/status/1501124825342955521) is full of other good examples of leaders to draw inspiration from. You can see more suggestions in this CAT slack thread too on the subject (https://climate-tech.slack.com/archives/CD4MB738S/p1646660424630379) (thanks Steve, Jasveen!)
No, we haven’t forgot about Ukraine - this thread in the CAT slack is filling up with further links about what you can do (https://climate-tech.slack.com/archives/C01A0THTQRW/p1645808383819189) . We had some feedback about the clumsy wording last week in the opening part of in the newsletter - sorry about that. To clear things up, there’s a fuller apology, and some background at the bottom of this newsletter.

E8: TIL what it costs (https://climate.mit.edu/podcasts/til-what-it-costs) Todayâs episode is about the money of climate change. When people talk about how much it costs to stop climate change, what are we paying for? And whoâs paying, exactly? And if we donât pay to stop climate change â how much will that cost us? To answer these questions, we spoke with Dr. Barbara Buchner from the Climate Policy Initiative. TURNING AIR INTO STONE: TECH-BASED CARBON REMOVAL (https://www.climateone.org/audio/turning-air-stone-tech-based-carbon-removal) The last time the atmospheric CO2 amounts were as high as they are today was more than 3 million years ago. At that time, sea levels were 50â80 feet higher than they are now and temperatures were 2°â3°C (3.6°â5.4°F) higher than in the pre-industrial era. If we stopped burning all fossil fuels today, there still would be enough CO2 in the atmosphere to cause the extreme weather conditions we are already experiencing. This means that not only do we need to stop burning fossil fuels, we need to start removing CO2 from the atmosphere.

An apology about last week’s intro
We had some feedback last week about the Global North / Global South reference last week, saying it implied that folks outside the Global North didn’t care about what was happening in Ukraine, and it separated this war from other ongoing wars around the world.
Reading it again, we can see how that came across, and apologise for wording it so clumsily - this was the opposite of effect of what we were going for ð¬. With the latest IPCC report being published the same week, we were trying not to minimise the impacts detailed there, which are occurring globally, and we totally missed the mark.
We’ll try harder next time, and be more careful with the terminology we use, instead of reaching for Global North/South in this way. For those interested, this piece was helpful in finding alternatives, with guidance when to use them (https://text.npr.org/372684438) .
Hey CATs,
Wow, what a week. If you’re in the Global North, then it’s hard to ignore what’s going on in Ukraine. If you’re anywhere else the latest IPCC report shared earlier this week makes for pretty stark reading. But it’s right now, it’s understandable if you don’t have the headspace for that as well. We’ll set a bit of time for that next week though, with some explainers, and other resources to make sense of it
In the meantime, if you’re looking at the new coming from Ukraine and want to do something, we’ve compiled a list of resources (https://climate-tech.slack.com/archives/C01A0THTQRW/p1645808383819189) , from places to donate to, to sample letters to send to your representative. These are likely to be very Eurocentric, so we’d welcome help, to share with CATs in your part of the world too. This week, we’re also repurposing the weekly coworking sessions, and CAT Coffee (https://climate-tech.slack.com/archives/C01A0THTQRW/p1645808383819189) to have space for spending some time working through these with other CATS.
