Letâs dig in!
** Community projects
Greener AWS sooner â On September 20th, Amazon surprised a lot of people by committing to net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 and 100% renewable energy by 2030. In no small part, this achievement comes from the work done by the Amazon Employees For Climate Justice (https://twitter.com/amznforclimate) . But, as they say (https://twitter.com/AMZNforClimate/status/1174729463344427008) , this is not enough because «the Paris Agreement, by itself, wonât get us to a livable world».
A group of CAT members is working on increasing the pressure on Amazon, by asking customers of AWS to sign a letter (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1M0emUcXson4j6gGbjQZYJ443wxTQcpz7xrc1vHPF4RQ/edit) that requests a faster switch to renewables and more transparency in energy sourcing. If you want to help or if you or your customers run AWS infrastructure, drop into #proj-aws (https://app.slack.com/client/T4HLEQA3F/CMR2L8ZE0) to learn more.
Free software if green software â What if there was an open-source license that only allowed a piece of software to be used to carbon neutral or carbon positive companies? A group of CAT members is drafting up such a license with the explicit goal of making carbon neutrality the cheaper alternative.
If you have experience with open-source licenses or just want to help, join #proj-green-oss-license (https://app.slack.com/client/T4HLEQA3F/CP0LXHABZ) .
A Hacker News for climate news â Hacker News is one of the most popular websites the tech community congregates around, but climate stories â even when very tech-related â are often buried and flagged as spam by users. A group of CAT members is working on an alternative: Climate News.
The project just kicked off and is in the planning phase. Join the #proj-climate-news (https://app.slack.com/client/T4HLEQA3F/CNMUXJBJR) if you want to contribute.

HOWTO find a green job â The climate strikes got world-wide media attention â now what? Letâs get to work! Roman Leventov wrote an in-depth practical guide (https://medium.com/@leventov/how-to-find-a-job-in-a-tech-company-helping-to-combat-climate-change-practical-guide-e212e262a32) for tech professionals looking to find a job that has a direct impact on climate change. From green jobs board to finding industry-specific leading companies, this guide covers it all.
And, of course, Roman also mentions our #d-jobs-opportunities (https://app.slack.com/client/T4HLEQA3F/CD5NYP079) channel on Slack. If you are looking for a new job, itâs a great place to start.
The world energy production, live â One of the most powerful tools we have for communicating climate change data is visualization; maps are a familiar way for people to look at the world. The electricitymap.org (https://www.electricitymap.org/) page provides a world view of carbon-intense electricity production and consumption, and is an open-source project looking for contributors (https://github.com/tmrowco/electricitymap-contrib) .
Climate crisis book club â If print media is more your style, check out this list of important books (https://trello.com/b/BBeuc68l/impact-makers-book-club) that address the crisis and how to respond from a variety of angles – political, scientific, and organizational.
Thatâs all for this month. See you next time!
