I delisted my books from Draft2Digital. Here's why.
Please read, as this change will impact book distribution from me moving forward.
Draft2Digital, which I distributed all of my books through (save for Amazon and Itch.io, which I sell through separately) recently announced that authors earning less than $100 per year MUST pay a “maintenance fee” of $12 a year.
I’d like to add here that Draft2Digital has always taken at least 30%-40% of my royalties from each ebook I sell through the site as is, depending on which retailer I sell said books through. Adding a “maintenance fee” for authors that don’t reach a certain threshold of income on top of this is unfair to us.
I would love to sell wide. I do not want to make selling my books exclusive to Amazon unless I have absolutely no choice. However, I must face a few facts here:
I am one of those authors that earns less than $100 USD a year through Draft2Digital.
The amount I earn on D2D is nowhere close to reaching the minimum $100 threshold to bypass paying maintenance fees. This means that the maintenance fee would apply to me if I continue maintaining a Draft2Digital account.
I earn the most money through Amazon or Itch.io depending on the year. I won’t give exact numbers for privacy, but I’ve benefited more with selling ebooks through those two platforms than Draft2Digital.
Given the situation, I have delisted my books from Draft2Digital and will be closing down my D2D account immediately.
All of my books will be sold through just Amazon and Itch.io for now.
I will also be exploring alternate platforms to sell my books through, but I likely won’t get to that until after my upcoming YA short story collection Found is published.
In the meantime, the best way for you to support me would be through buying my books on Itch.io and Amazon.
Thanks for your patience as I navigate this change! I appreciate all of your support.
I also want you to keep in mind the other indie authors who will also be affected by this change. Many of us don’t earn enough to reach that $100 threshold to bypass paying maintenance fees. They will probably be deciding over this next while whether to continue distributing their books through D2D or distribute/sell them elsewhere.
Whatever they decide, please support them as best as you can! We appreciate every bit of support. Thank you!
