Week 10 · March 04, 2026

The relationship between AI systems and human psychology is changing faster than our ability to study it. This tracker exists to slow that down — to document, categorise, and surface what's actually happening.

The phenomenon of AI-induced psychological harm appears to be on an alarming upward trajectory. An analysis of the monthly case data indicates a significant increase in reported incidents, particularly in the recent months of 2026, where we see a stark spike in cases—rising from merely two cases in June 2025 to eleven in February 2026. This growth not only highlights a concerning trend but also suggests an emerging crisis as society grapples with the complexities of AI-human interactions and their psychological implications.

Within the documented cases, two predominant categories emerge: reality distortion and romantic attachment. The frequency of reality distortion cases suggests that many individuals are struggling with the boundary between virtual and actual reality. The increasing instances of psychosis linked to AI chatbots indicate a pressing issue where technology might be exacerbating underlying mental health conditions. Conversely, the romantic attachment category reveals a growing normalization of forming emotional bonds with AI, which raises questions about the nature of relationships and human connection in an increasingly digital age. The intertwining of affection for technology and deteriorating mental health creates a deeply concerning feedback loop that could lead to further psychological distress among users.
