PIVOT is a curated, but informal newsletter sharing opportunities across academia, government, nonprofits, and research organizations. It’s designed for students, early-career researchers, and professionals exploring or navigating careers in and beyond academia.

Each issue highlights a selection of:

• Internships and trainee-ships
• Fellowships and grants
• Postdoctoral positions
• Job opportunities

Most opportunities are drawn from public policy, data science, social science, and adjacent fields, though many are broadly applicable.

Why this exists

My informal emails started in 2020 when I noticed a growing number of opportunities for students outside of academia. Although I don’t teach, one of my professional goals is to highlight that careers beyond academia (particularly in the nonprofit and government sectors) shouldn’t be seen as “alternative,” but as viable, fulfilling career paths. These sectors often lack the kind of talent that can truly make a difference in our communities.

Over the years, these emails have evolved and grown to the point that I’m now using Buttondown to help manage the email list.

What to expect

• Roughly one email per month (sometimes more or less, depending on what opportunities I see and how busy I am; or lazy…)
• You can unsubscribe at any time.
• Your email will only be used to send this newsletter.
• Content will focus on opportunities (PIVOT!), occasional random asks from me (e.g., searching for a Kentucky researcher to partner with on a project), and relevant resources (e.g., a colleague's blog about navigating the current job market).
