Last days of Exhibition No.1 / Futile Futures / next art party
Civic Art Bureau opened with Exhibition No.1 on Saturday October 5 with an incredibly warm and generous reception. About two thirds of Canberra’s art scene were at the party. The remaining third were probably down the coast for the long weekend.
Extra special thanks to the eleven wonderful artists who participated, and to Drew Halyday and Benny Chop for their remarkable skill in hanging the show so beautifully, to Dioni for her invaluable help and friendship in pulling it all together, to the Professor for spinning tunes on the wheels of steel and to MADA wines for the excellent prosecco.
Our next party is Thursday 7 November to celebrate the opening of Unhinged: Richard Larter and Peter Maloney, curated by Mark Bayly. Proceedings will begin at the Drill Hall Gallery from 6pm, where Raquel Ormella will open Richard Larter: Free Radical and Riffing On: Pat Larter’s Rhythms and Pete Maloney’s Blues curated by Tony Oates. Everyone is then invited to the Civic Art Bureau to stay up late and get unhinged.
The Bureau bar will be open and we will be selecting sides from our dear late friend Peter Maloney’s collection of 7 inch records, hot wax that will help you shake your money maker.
The estates of Richard Larter and Peter Maloney are represented by Utopia Art Sydney.
Last days for Exhibition No. 1
Don’t miss the inaugural Civic Art Bureau show. Last day is Saturday 26 Oct but we’ll be hanging around on Sunday afternoon so you can have a last look then as well.
Exhibition No.1 presented eleven legendary artists working in and around Canberra: Emma Beer, Vivienne Binns OAM, Lucy Chetcuti, Liz Coats, Kirsten Farrell, Nicci Haynes, Merryn Lloyd, Raquel Ormella, Dionisia Salas, Stefanie Schulte, Ruth Waller.
Thanks to all of the art enthusiasts and collectors who generously supported the show and helped the Bureau get off to a very good start.
FUTILE FUTURES
On Tuesday 15 October Civic Art Bureau hosted FUTILE FUTURES, a satellite event and counterpoint to the NFAS’s Fantastic Futures conference. Attended by many visiting delegates and Canberra intelligentsia, this was a mighty social night that included installations, screenings and quiz shows.
Thanks to the inestimable efforts of Katrina Sluis and Litia Roko who curated an impressive cast of international and local artists: Ella Barclay (ACT), Constant Dullaart (Netherlands), Taller Estampa (Spain), Ben Grosser (USA), Saskia Haalebos (ACT), Nicci Haynes (ACT), Maddie Hepner (ACT), Zoe Horn, Liam Magee, Anna Munster and the ChatFOSbot (NSW), Machine Listening (Vic), Silvio Lorusso (Portugal), Maveryn Reid (ACT), Litia Roko (ACT), Sebastian Schmieg (Berlin) and Katrina Sluis (ACT).
The inaugural Who wants to be a TechBro Millionaire was won by Pia van Gelder. But as we all know, everyone’s a winner, especially those who rocked up to the Futile Futures. There are a few souvenir “Artificial Intelligence? No Thanks” mugs available, a product of Spanish art collective Taller Estampa. Don’t miss out!
Limited edition prints and zines by Raquel Ormella and Nicci Haynes are also still available.
Until next time, cheers!
