2 New Projects, Museum of Math + New Equate 8 Features
We’re thrilled to share a major update to Equate 8, plus the recording of our recent talk at the Museum of Mathematics in NYC, where we explored the origins of the game and the surprising role of magic squares in its design.
And that’s not all—scroll down for details on our latest projects, including the reveal of our engrossing new co-op game!
🎤 Museum of Mathematics Talk
In August, we had the privilege of presenting at MoMath. Our talk introduced audiences to the history of magic squares and how they inspired the creation of Equate 8.
🧮 What’s New in Equate 8
1) Blitz Mode – Rapid-Fire Fun
A new run-based mode where each puzzle begins just one move away from completion. Every 10th level increases in difficulty: first two moves, then three.
- The first run of the day is the same for everyone, so you can challenge friends and family for high scores.
- It’s fast, fun, and seriously addictive—we can’t stop playing.
2) User Puzzle Generation

Teachers, puzzle fans, and power-players rejoice! You can now generate and explore the full database of possible Equate 8 puzzles using custom criteria.
- Unlock with 20 gold stars or a code from CMM.
- Perfect for classrooms, study groups, or anyone who wants complete control over puzzle difficulty and variety. Educators can also request codes for free, unlocked versions in line with our nonprofit mission.
3) Bug Fixes and Miscellaneous Features
- Equate 8 is now available on itch.io.
- New keyboard shortcuts on desktop builds.
- Fixed bugs, including a streak-tracking issue.
👉 If you lost progress due to a bug, email us at info@cinqmarsmedia.org and we’ll send you a “recovery” code to restore perks.
💻 Dupligit: Push Once, Publish Twice
We’ve also released Dupligit, a free MIT-licensed tool for developers.
- Run it via npm or as a GitHub Action.
- It automatically sanitizes and mirrors your private repo to a public one on every push.
- Ideal for keeping public codebases clean and secure, while encouraging more open-source contributions.
We’re already using Dupligit across our own projects — learn more here.
🔢 Coming Soon: Imperfect Sudoku Closed Alpha

Imperfect Sudoku is our next game in development — a true co-op sudoku experience.
- Two players share the same grid.
- Each starts with partial, imperfect information.
- Neither can solve the puzzle alone — it requires collaboration.
We’re aiming to launch a closed alpha in the coming months. Interested in testing? Sign up here and we’ll be in touch. 💌
Thank you for your continued support and for being part of our community!
