81 Huron
We have a chance to buy and keep 81 Huron in community hands forever. Help us do it!
Toronto Chinatown Land Trust is raising $600,000 by November 15, 2026 to help bring 81 Huron into permanent community ownership.
Chinatown has survived generations of displacement because people built institutions, relationships, and spaces that served the community rather than treating the neighbourhood simply as real estate. Today, we have an opportunity to continue that tradition.
Toronto Chinatown Land Trust is a democratic, community member led nonprofit that acquires and stewards land permanently for working class benefit. Our vision is simple: a Chinatown where gathering spaces and housing remain accessible to the people, organizations, local businesses and cultural activities that make Chinatown, Chinatown.
By putting 81 Huron into our community land trust, we will turn two short term rentals into forever homes, and enable two local small businesses to stay and thrive. We see this building as a strategic first property for us to own together, because of its location on Huron Square, the beating heart of West Chinatown. It is a classic Chinatown style split level houseshop, with two storefronts, and two homes above them.
But our members cannot do it alone.
We need to raise $600,000 by November 15 to realize this opportunity.
A neighbour has generously offered to match $5 for every dollar donated in the month of October until we reach this goal, meaning we need to raise $100,000 from our supporters.
To all of Toronto: If you have ever eaten here, worked here, organized here, grown up here, found community here or simply believe Chinatown deserves a future, we are asking you to be part of this campaign.
Whether you can contribute $50, $500, $5,000 or $50,000, your gift brings us closer to a Chinatown where the community has the power to determine what happens to its own neighbourhood. We have a chance to buy and keep 81 Huron in community hands. Help us do it!

More news will be shared throughout October about how this acquisition was made possible, our plans for the building, and what comes next.
As we move forward, our membership-led committees will help build the structures for shared governance and long-term stewardship of the property. Members will help shape how the building is operated, how rents are set, and how we plan for its long-term financial and community sustainability.
We’ll continue to share updates, answer questions, and invite members into the process through our newsletter and regular member updates.
