I’m Alvin Chang, a journalist who tells stories with data and pixels.

I’m a professor in the New School’s Journalism + Design department; I’m data journalist with The Pudding; and I’m the author of the forthcoming book, Why Maps Matter (2027).

ChartHead is primarily behind-the-scenes look at my work. I’ll talk about how the concept, data, design, and tech work together to tell rich stories, with the ultimate goal of helping readers build out the maps in their head.
