Hello from Canada! π¨π¦ π
We made it here safely β all together. Last time I wrote about my wifeβs visa plot twist: Immigration Canada was not satisfied with the print quality of the visa document (the text didnβt line up straight) and so cancelled the visa requesting we fly to Manila to get a new one. A few phone calls and some chewed nails and they re-activated the visa, and we were safely able to travel, crossing three borders and nobody giving the crooked visa the side eye once! It was all stress but no problem, and had we done what they said, we would have had to spend at least $5000 on rebooked flights and hotel rooms while waiting for a reprint. Dodged a bullet there.
Anywho, we landed in Canada, ate poutine, moved our stuff into the new condo, and went ice skating. As you do π¨π¦ 𦫠π«
Of course, just as I recovered from the jet lag and the move, I immediately spent 9 consecutive days commuting to downtown Vancouver to participate in the Internet Engineering Task Force Meeting. That was very enlightening and I still have a lot of follow up and reporting to do.
Since I cannot seem to limit myself to one thing at a time, I was also going to side events for a parallel conference we called LOCALHOST. This was a week of community events we organized to discuss how we can make stuff and manage it together as a local community. There was a lot of discussion about protocol development as opposed to app development. The big keyword of the conf was βοΈ #VancouverEnergy
βοΈ. We still have to write up some after action reports, but you can see some photos on the DWebYVR blog β
So, next is a couple of weeks of enjoying the cloudless summer of Vancouver, then we will go up to the Okanagan to spend time with family, before September rolls around and the kids start at their new school.
This is a pretty low key personal letter. There is a lot going on in the world, but it is perfectly okay to shut it out for a bit to take care of your own.
Take care of yourselves!

Nada! I owe you the final two chapters of my Taiwan trip report (see the first couple of posts here) and some stuff on the IETF which I will work on in the coming weeks. But, being summer holidays, I may not get to it. No biggie!

The Mushroom at the End of the World by Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing
(73% Complete)
A fascinating examination of capitalism through multiple rhizomatic lenses and then capping off with another lense: matsutake. An amazing work! (Just found out it is part of a series by Bruno Latour, so that tracks.)
