Howdy partners!
Welcome back. I hope this upcoming weekend is a productive one for you. Or, if you need a break, do that. Play some Zelda. Eat some ice cream. Enjoy the sun. Code indoors. Follow your dreams.

Something that interested me this week
Everyone's talking about that Google manifesto that was leaked this past week and I've gotten a bunch of messages about what I think about the whole situation. And if I'm being honest, I don't want to think about it. I read it and just got the familiar tiredness of encountering another opinion about women "on average" not belonging in the tech industry. I'm not going to comment on the political side of things, because I do think that there's a lot of conservative people in this day and age who are shut down for their opinions. That being said, this article wasn't a political stance. There were some good articles that helped articulate my thoughts. But here's what I have to say on the subject:
To women/non-binary/POC/other minority folks: Thanks for sticking it out so far. Ignore people who say that you don't belong, and keep being the awesome tech person that you are, whether you are a developer, a technical writer, a developer evangelist, a product manager, a project manager, a designer, a researcher, a tech recruiter, a tester, or some other role that is important in this industry. Your experience is your experience. Your brain is your brain. If you get tired of reading the endless articles of the latest sexism/racism/x-ism scandal, don't read it. You don't need to be an expert on the -isms to be an expert in your field.
To men: Everyone should have the opportunity to be technical if they want to. Everyone can contribute technically, and maybe even surprise you with some ideas you hadn't heard before. Because the industry is so biased at times, events and opportunities targeting minority groups in the field are made so that people can have a community and a chance that they might not otherwise have. I encourage you to accept this, and welcome people into this wacky field of ours. Don't question why I didn't also direct the previous paragraph at you, too. If someone tells you a negative experience they've had that is likely due to the way they look, don't shut it down and invalidate by saying, "oh they were just a jerk" or something. Don't get defensive. Listen, look out for behavior like that, and help shut that behavior down. And thank you in advance.
That's a lot of words. Let's get back to our regularly scheduled jazz.
