October Newsletter
Anthology submissions are closed, publishing enquiries open next month, and other writing opportunities

Submissions have now closed
Thank you to everyone who sent us a story for our first anthology, and who spread the word! We received over 100 submissions from every corner of the North of England - a fantastic success.
We're delighted by all of the stories sent to us, and are busy at work making our selections. If you sent us a story, you can expect to receive our response later this month.
Inevitably we'll have to turn away many excellent stories, but please don't be discouraged if your work doesn't make this round - we have lots of anthologies planned for the future!
As a reminder, you can support us and get editorial feedback through our ko-fi page. (we've adjusted the format of how this works, so have a gander if you want to find out more).
Publishing enquiries open next month
From the start of November we'll be open to enquiries for novellas and short fiction collections, from writers in the North of England.
We're looking for strange and literary speculative fiction to publish over the next couple of years, and will be open as long as is needed to find the right fit for the press.
Full details, including the terms and conditions and what we offer, will be shared at the start of November.
Other opportunities
- The Jerwood Fellowship is open to applications from early-career writers in the North of England, providing a bursary and writing support. The deadline is the 15th October.
- The submissions window for Indie Novella closes on the 16th October. They're looking to publish novellas from working class and marginalised communities, and/or stories addressing mental health.
- Author Amy Lord is running an online workshop series this Autumn. The next session, on writing ghost stories, is being held on the 22nd.
- Extra Teeth Magazine are holding a free online session about how to approach agents on the 29th October. Register here.
- Shortbox Comics Fair is open throughout this month, showcasing original comics from international creators. It's always an absolute treasure trove of speculative art.
Thanks for reading, and wishing you a lovely halloween season!
