July newsletter

Our first anthology has opened for submissions
From now until the end of September, we're inviting writers living in the North of England to send us short stories on the theme of folklore!
We'll be accepting stories of 2,000 to 10,000 words. Chosen authors will be published in our first anthology, planned for print and digital release in summer next year. They'll also get a £20 honorarium, four copies of the finished anthology, and 50% off further copies.
See the full guidelines and how to submit on our website.
New blog: how to get your short stories selected
We've put together a few steps you can take to improve the odds of your stories getting picked up by journals and other publishing outlets (this applies to our anthology too!).
This includes the simple mistakes we've seen when reading submissions before, a few ways to level up your writing and make your submission stand out, and some higher-level advice to consider.
You can read it now on the shiny new blog section of our website!
Friends of Carnyx: Sidekick Books
Sidekick Books is a publisher of hybrid and experimental collections and pamphlets (primarily poetry) based in London and Cambridge.
I first met the lovely Sidekick team through a previous publishing role, and had the pleasure of having a prose poem featured in their 2024 anthology Ten Poets Get To The Bottom of Some Grisly Crimes.
Their Ten Poets series is ongoing, and features the most imaginative anthology themes I've ever come across, including defending cities from giant beasts and charming the pants off historical figures.
You can find Sidekick on Bluesky, Insta, and their website.
Thanks for reading, and we hope to see your stories hitting our inbox soon!
