Revealing this year's submission themes

Exclusive for you lovely newsletter subscribers, we're giving you an early peek into what we're looking for in this year's two anthology call-outs.

Both anthologies will be for speculative fiction from writers living in the North of England, and we'll be sharing further guidelines closer to when subs open.

Anthology 2: A Carnyx anthology of sorcery

For our second anthology, we're looking for tales of wild, profound, and dangerous magic - and the unscrupulous rogues who wield it.

Subversive spins on sword and sorcery, urban fantasies of power-hungry mages, experiments filled with psychedelic miracles - as long as it's audaciously magical, we want it for our anthology of sorcerous tales.

Submission window: 1st June-31st July

Anthology 3: A Carnyx anthology of cosmic horror

If creeping doom is your vibe, if you scribble tales cowering under the weight of an unfathomable universe, if your dreams are filled with the landscapes of dead planets, we want your writing for our third anthology!

We're looking to curate a book of weird existential fiction, sci-fi horror steeped in philosophical dread, and stories that stare into the churning heart of the cosmos, to be released in time for Halloween 2027.

Submission window: 1st October-30th November

Other opportunities

  • Brick Lane Bookshop's short story prize is open until the 2nd March, for writers who haven't yet had a book-length work published.
