Submissions are rolling in!

We're delighted to have already started receiving stories for our first anthology call-out! Thank you to everyone who has submitted so far.

There's two months to go until the deadline on the 30th September, so there's still plenty of time to craft a folkloric tale to send to us.

Read our guidelines and how to submit here.

New blog: What do we look for in a folkloric story?

To help anyone who's deliberating over what to send us, we've gathered our thoughts on what constitutes a folkloric tale, and the themes we're interested to see in your submissions, as well as some suggested wider reading.

There's no surprise that folklore is an ambiguous term, and this list certainly isn't comprehensive, but hopefully it gets the ideas flowing!

You can read the blog here.

Friends of Carnyx: Fly on the Wall Press

Fly on the Wall is a multi-award winning Manchester-based publisher of novels, poetry and anthologies, with a focus on political writing.

I had the pleasure of being mentored by founding editor Isabelle Kenyon as I was pulling ideas together for Carnyx - an invaluable conversation, which helped me focus on what I wanted to do with the press and where to begin. You can check out Isabelle's mentorship info here.

I also recently read their anthology Modern Gothic, which features some of the best gothic stories I've come across - thoroughly recommend!

You can find Fly on the Wall on all the socials, including Insta and Bluesky, and on their website here.

Other opportunities

  • Carmen et Error is open for submissions of poetry and flash fiction throughout August.
  • The Emma Press is open for submissions of short fiction and poetry collections, novellas, and more, until the 15th August.
  • The Bee is open to writing from working-class writers until the 11th August.
  • Humber SFF is open until the end of August for submissions for their first anthology, for writers from East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.

Thanks for reading, and happy writing.
