The Oxford English Dictionary defines the compulsion to begin a newsletter edition with an unexpected concept to hook the reader and make them eager to receive and read what is essentially an advertisement as: “The Carl” (OED.5.4.B.2998). It also notes that: “Using the ‘Oxford English Dictionary defines…’ trope ought to be a capital offence” (OED.5.4.B.2999). Those erudite rapscallions across the pond might be onto something with that.
Classic text, good time, thought-provoking: These are the Letterboxd tags you might use if this production of Rhinoceros were a movie. It’s not, though. It’s a play; in a cabaret-style theatre, no less, so tickets are variably priced by, like, table. Bring a group! We’ve got four performances at The Slipper Room, all matinee, click the links for details:
Reminder! New play, dope team. A symbolic investigation of how a family unit absorbs and diffracts extreme social pressures. Rehearsals so far are really fucking good. You’re not going to want to miss this one. Expect the ticket link in mid-October. We’ll be playing at the East Village Basement, which is a very small venue, so spots for the five performances will go fast. Pencil it in now: November 8th, 9th, 10th.
Since it’s coming up on the anniversary, I wanted to share a brief celebration of some of the folks in (and behind) the above-mentioned Dancing at Lughnasa production.
Bethsabé Caballero, front left, just wrapped her first Off-Broadway run in Las Vidas Rotas at Repertorio Español. Sitting behind her is Jane Purnell, who stars opposite Rory Culkin in the short film “Speed Queen 51”, featured next week at the New York Shorts International Film Festival. Front right is Nanouli Shevardnadze, with whom I’m so happy to once more share the stage in Cabin (which, again, you should come see). And our director, Miguel Bregante, just finished an observership with Saheem Ali on The Public Theater’s Good Bones. Like, unreal. What a crop!
Not to get treacly but it’s a genuine gift to have the opportunity to work with such inspiring artists. The world’s fucking crazy, but there’s good stuff too, and I’m very grateful to everyone who’s part of the good stuff.
That’s all from me. Bisous!
Carl
P.S. Some news, hot off the press: The cast album for The Dastardly Thornes v. The Town of Goldhaven (last summer’s big gay courtroom cowboy deconstructionist neo-western musical comedy hit) is almost done mixing/mastering and will be releasing soon!
This is the Carl Bindman Newsletter, for members of my professional or personal networks whom I think should get the scoop and be kept in the loop.
