Noticings 6: Roadmaps, automations and digital natives
July at Careful Trouble!
This month, as we see a change of government, we convened friends and colleagues to share and shape ideas for technology policy in a new government.
We also released two new reports reflecting on how we can build different public services. One focuses on building support systems for and with young people, whilst the second examines how public bodies use automation.
Building a roadmap for progressive UK tech policy

Earlier this month, we convened an event to ask what progressive technology policy might look like for the new government in the UK.
We worked alongside Connected by Data, and the Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy at the University of Cambridge, with support from Zoominfo to bring together more than 60 representatives from civil society, academia, industry, policy and government.
Across the afternoon, topics covered included AI and regulatory innovation, data and public service delivery, sustainable digital infrastructure, and technology adoption and regional economic growth.
You can find a detailed write-up of the event here.
Meeting Young People Where They Are
This month, we published a new report exploring how young people find support and services online. We share a new model: essential digital support, which outlines a new approach to young people's services.
Automating Public Service: A Careful Approach
In a new report from Anna Dent, we explore and illustrate the risks that public bodies need to assess when considering automation. We set out seven guiding principles to realise the benefits of automation while also putting human needs at the centre. Read the report here.
