What's new in Captrice - April 2025
Hey there,
This is the very first issue of the Captrice newsletter!
Highlights
Captrice was on the first page of Hacker News earlier this month. Received encouraging responses and constructive feedback
Launched the app on Peerlist
Released quite a few improvements and bug fixes
14 newsletter subscribers this month (Welcome!)
Earned my first internet dollar through the buy me a coffee page (Thank you!)
I'm happy to share that some of the suggestions have already been implemented!
Support for standard notation
Standard notation is now supported along with guitar tablature. You may choose to display score or tab or both.

Provision to hide/show tablature
Multiple users pointed out that once they’ve learnt an exercise, it’s pointless to have the tablature occupying significant screen space. I completely agree. You can now hide or show this section as per your preference.

Keyboard shortcut if you forget to enable capture mode
Forgot to enable capture mode? No problem - press m instead of spacebar when stopping the metronome to save your practice entry and enable capture mode at the same time.

Provision to edit a practice entry
You can now edit a practice entry. This comes in handy in case you forget to select the correct variation before starting to practice.

Warning for Safari/iOS users
Safari/iOS users are shown a warning about possible data loss if they don’t use the app within 7 days due to Apple Webkit’s storage policies. More details here. I am evaluating potential workarounds to address this.

Bug fixes
The metronome layout is fixed to render correctly on smaller devices
A subtle bug in the “Total practice duration” chart (under Dashboard > Analytics) is fixed
Only the relevant keyboard shortcuts will work depending whether the metronome is running or stopped
Additions to the library
Diatonic modes in G major - One of my own exercises
Legato triplets - By Signals Music Studio
Head over to the library to check them out.
Tip of the month
Want to control sort order of the exercises in the left side menu? They're listed alphabetically which means you can easily reorder them by adding number prefixes to their titles e.g. 1, 2, 3... (or 01, 02, 03... if there are more than 10 exercises). All library collections follow this convention, so import one to see an example.
What’s next?
Few more “quality of life” improvements in the pipeline
A “Learning mode” that will have midi playback along with tabs/notation to help users learn an exercise or piece of music
Initial research and ground work for the "device sync" feature has begun
I have been reaching out to guitar teachers to understand how Captrice can enhance their students’ practice routines. Please reach out if you're a teacher or can introduce me to one. I’m open to explore other collaboration opportunities too
More updates next month!
Please send me an email at vineet@captrice.io or naikvin@gmail.com for anything.
Thanks for reading!
