🔸 Cantata Newsletter: Two New Videos on Modding and a New Unit Mechanic
Welcome to the Cantata newsletter! Thanks for being subscribed, and as always it’s worth stating how much it means to me that you care about this weird tactical space game!
We’re been deeply working on all sorts of stuff in the game recently, and also been continuing our series on modding, so we’ve got much to show below! Enjoy!
Modding Stream Series Continues!
We’ve been running new streams every two weeks on our Twitch channel (and Youtube + Steam) where we walk through the process of creating an overhaul mod in Cantata from scratch! We brought this up in the last newsletter, but since that announcement have done two other streams, both of which have been archived and uploaded to Youtube.
The second stream we did was dedicated to talking about terrain mechanics in the game and how you can leverage them in your own mods to craft interesting maps:

The third stream was dedicated to teaching you all how to actually make and import custom units into the game, no code required!

This week’s stream (4/14/21 @ 11am EST) will be dedicated to talking in-depth about the CHUNKY topic of unit mechanics, showing you all the little levers you can pull in your own mods to build unique gameplay.
Like before, we’ll be streaming to our Twitch channel, Youtube, and Steam), so if you follow us anywhere you should catch it! Feel free to drop by and ask questions about Cantata generally as well! Hope to see you there!
Unit Storage
Unit Storage - YouTube
Interactables (our name for Units and Buildings) now have the ability to store other interactables inside of themselves! This may seem like a small thing but it has HUGE ramifications for lots of parts of Cantata.
For one, this is a major feature of the Human faction. Human’s control “larger” vehicles for war that require some number of Conscripts (the base Human unit) to be loaded into them for effective operation. The Tower Transport (seen in the above video) can ferry Conscripts around the map, saving both time and AP.
However, should an interactable with things in its storage get destroyed, the items in storage are destroyed as well! And yes, you can have interactables inside of interactables inside of interactables for a full nesting-doll style structure, but we’ll leave that mostly to the modders :)
There’s lots of other gameplay features unlocked by this, some of which we’ll be talking on during the next stream! Otherwise, keep an eye on the forums, as I’m sure it will come up again soon!
New and Improved Forums
You DO know Cantata has a forum right? We’ve recently redesigned the forums and would love to have you stop by and ask any questions you have about the game! Because places like Discord and Twitter can be so ephemeral and intense, the forum is a place we want to cultivate as a calm, chill place to talk about the game.
We also want people to start collaborating here around making mods together, sharing maps, tips, etc., so I hope you stop by and join the conversation!
I’ll wrap up the newsletter here and look forward to reaching out to you all again in a month or so. As always, thanks for reading!
