You’re invited to the party

Happy summer friends!

Calculated Discomfort is leveling up, and I'm throwing a party to celebrate.

For a while now I've been having trouble determining exactly what the next iteration of Calculated Discomfort the band really is. After some thoughts and experiments, I've come to the conclusion that the name has grown beyond what a single ensemble can define. Calculated Discomfort is an umbrella that encompasses many of my musical and social ideas. Therefore, going forward, Calculated Discomfort will be the production company that houses events I organize, recordings I produce, and educational opportunities I offer.

It's been a while since I've organized a proper event, so Friday July 11th I'm proud to bring you Earth-Space Balance, the first program produced by the new Calculated Discomfort.

Earth-Space Balance July 11 at Color Club Tavern

Calculated Discomfort presents Earth-Space Balance, a new series highlighting musicians who combine modern electronics with classic instrumental sounds to create a futuristic soundtrack to a more inclusive world. It’s chiller than the club and more social than a listening room, so weather you want to get up and dance or listen contemplatively, you’ll be able to enjoy the night your way.

Experience a sonic cocktail perfectly blending earthy notes of organic rhythm with technicolor electronic flavors designed to send your mind to the outer reaches of imagination.

8:00-8:20: Multi-instrumentalist Neko Suave will get us moving with his signature brand of Dayton Funk. Bounce to the melodic talkbox-infused beats that Roger Troutman pioneered, updated for 2025.

8:30-9:20: Experience All the Wizards Were Here, a band that improvises long-form musical narratives using the building blocks of free jazz, R&B and various electronic musics. The Wizards will bring to life stories from a fictional universe through music, words and theatrical interpretation—and you might even get to contribute to the narrative madlib style.

9:30-10:30: Groove the night to a close when DJ Nick2Bomb and jazz keyboardist JP Prentiss (A.K.A. Julius Tucker) team up to present a party set of beats, keys and samples from unexpected sources. This highly original dance-forward music will keep your feet on the ground and your head in the stratosphere.

Friday July 11th at the Color Club Tavern--doors open at 7:30.

Tickets and directions here!

I look forward to sharing more about the mission of Calculated Discomfort, and hope to catch you in July.

Have a great day,

Tommy
