Two shows at two of Chicago's most welcoming venues this week
Hello friends!
Hope you're having a relaxing Sunday wherever you may be.
Everyone's been talking about how mild the winter in Chicago has been. Yes, it's alarming from a planet-inhabitability standpoint, and yes, it is convenient in it's own way ( for now), but it still has been winter in Chicago--which means we've all been a bit more hermetic than usual, even when we're busy.
That being said, even though spring may not be here meteorologically, I've definitely been feeling the spring social energy bubbling up this past week. The vibe during rehearsals has been a bit more playful, there've been a few more casual friend hangs, and I've been motivated to take long walks. If you're feeling the spring energy too, or are looking for somewhere to get that feeling started, I've got two events this week for you.
Timbre Tribe at Elastic Arts Tuesday
First up, this Tuesday I'll be performing with some old and new collaborators at Elastic Arts for Naydja Bruton's new Timbre Tribe Series. We'll be playing a set at 8:30 and there's an open jam afterwards. The band features old friends Lyn Rye (bass) and Trevor Hill (woodwinds) alongside Neko Suave (trombone) and Chandler Brown (tap dance). (I'm also accompanying Chandler for her birthday show at the Burlington Bar this Monday).
I love bringing new groups together, and Naydja's series is such a fertile place for that to happen. Check out this sweet description of Timbre Tribe, and hope to catch you there!
"Timbre Tribe, is for those who desire to deep dive into the spiritual practice of texture and tone by way of rhythm and melody. Hosted by Naydja Bruton, the series focuses on creating a safe and educational space for freedom of expression by way of improvisation. This is a good place for up and coming musicians and artists to build community and for seasoned musicians to share their knowledge. There will be an opening set from this month’s ‘house band’ followed by an extended open jam. Bring your instrument to get down!"
Prosthetic at Cafe Mustache Wednesday
A performance at Mustache is always a special ocasion. The sound of the room and the lack of barriers between performer and audience always create something magical for me. This Wednesday Julius Tucker (keys), Marcos Rios (guitar) and myself will be performing an improvised set at 8:30. It's the first time these two friends of mine meet on a stage and I've been so excited to find out what spaces we'll get into. Come for the fireworks and stay for the second set by New York trumpeter Michael Sarian and his quartet, who are touring in support of a new album.
Hope to see you soon,
Tommy
