This month: drums meet machines

Hello friends!

First off, I need to let you know that this will be one of the last newsletters I'll be sending through Tiny Letter. Don't worry, these updates aren't going anywhere, I just need to switch services as this one is shutting down at the end of the month. Ideally, nothing will really change with your experience. Email's will just come from calculated_discomfort@buttondown.email instead of my address until I get a few more technical things nailed down, at which point it'll be back to tcdrums.com

In short, I need to move around some behind-the-scenes pieces, so if you stop hearing from me next month, just check your spam.

Technological experimentation in February

I've recently found myself diving back into some of my older creative interests, and looking for ways to reincorporate them into my musical world. In particular, I've been getting back into the sounds of synthesizers and digitally manipulated acoustic instruments.

This month I'm performing in two shows that will allow me to put this reignited interest to use as I play percussion with electronic artists. On February 25th I will perform in an ensemble put together by Hugo Flores Garcia for a new computer music series, and February 28th I will lead a newly synthed-up version of Prosthetic at a nice venue. All the info is below.

Chicago Creative Machines at Experimental Sound Studio Feb. 25

Experimental Sound Studio recently announced Chicago Creative Machines, a series showcasing creative music from artists using machine learning (also known as AI). I'm surprised and honored to get to perform on the very first concert.

I'll be joining my friend Hugo Flores Garcia, who is a fantastic guitarist in addition to being a tech wizard. I appreciate Hugo's work because he's interested in technology's relationship with nature and art's relationship with science. He seeks to use AI to give humans more ways of interacting with one another, not for machines to overwhelm listeners with spontaneously generated stock content. It's safe to say this show ill have a healthy Earth-space balance.

Prosthetic at Fallen Log Feb. 28

Prosthetic will give its first performance of 2024 at the Fallen Log, a relatively new venue located in the back of famed Chicago vegan restaurant Kitchen 17.

We'll feature synthesist Kyle Werle along with old friends Trevor Hill (woodwinds), Victoria Boateng (djembe), and Stephanie Alma (vocals and percussion). Again, the Earth-space balance will be on point.

Prosthetic will kick the night off at 8pm followed by two great bands. I hope to catch you there.
