A focused winter leads to a fun-filled spring

Happy Thursday friends,

I was hoping to check in with you all sooner, but a slew of gigs, recordings and some exciting post production work made my month fly by. It's all been pretty good stuff though, and I hope you all are well.

There are a couple exciting things coming up in the Calculated Discomfort world that I want to highlight today + notes about other beloved projects. We've got a radio performance coming up mid month on WZRD and will be closing the month with a show at Cafe Mustache, so it's going to be new music live from two homes away from home. There's also a fundraiser event for Cuerpos Justificados (disability art and culture collective) around the corner in April. In terms of new recordings, my EP The Best Part about Capitalism is the Snacks is coming soon, and there'll be a single from Raro mid spring. Concert details are all below.

Have a great day and hope to catch you around,

Tommy

Live on WZRD Thursday Mar. 16

I'm happy to say I'll be continuing my roughly yearly tradition of doing a performance on the Wizard (WZRD 88.3FM Chicago). It's always a blast getting to set up in their space and lay down some new sounds for a local station that still thrives on independent music. This March 16th I'll be joined by Karl Maher (guitar), Erica Miller (cello) and Stephanie Alma (vocals and percussion).

  • Thursday March 16th
  • 10pm
  • Live on 88.3fm (north side of Chicago) or at wzrdchicago.org

Show at Cafe Mustache Mar. 29

You know I'm always amped to play at Cafe Mustache, which has been a big supporter of my music since I started leading bands. this month I was asked to put together a group to open the night for New York-based trumpet player Michael Sarian. I'll be joined by Julius Tucker (keys) and Marcos Rios (guitar), a new combination of friends that will definitely send some sparks through the air.

  • Wednesday March 29
  • 8:30pm
  • Cafe Mustache (2313 N Milwaukee Ave)
  • $10 suggested donation

Save the date / upcoming

In addition to the events listed below, I'd like to ask you to save the date for April first, when Cuerpos Justificados (justified bodies) throws our first fundraiser event. We've been putting on some fantastic disability art and culture events at the Agitator Gallery, and we're trying to raise money so we can guarantee better pay for our featured performers, keep our regular events affordable, and overall create a better environment for the development of work by disabled artists. It's going to be in-person and on zoom. There'll be music, food, raffles and more. Stay tuned!

Also upcoming:

  • Saturday, Mar 4: playing duo with Stephanie Alma for a womens' month event at Jarvis Square Pottery (1443 W Jarvis Ave, 7pm)
  • Monday, Mar. 20: hosting my monthly jam at the Golden Dagger, which have been inspiring sessions as of late (2447 N Halsted, 8pm)
  • Tuesday, Mar. 28: guest hosting Naydja Bruton's timbre jam at Elastic Arts, which is the best new session in town in my opinion (3429 W Diversey, 8pm)
