5 books on my reading list for Conformists

Greetings fellow Conformists.

Like you, I have been staying home for the past few weeks. If you have doubts about Conformity, now is not the time for them: society is relying on you to stay home, stay healthy, and help flatten the curve. Lives depend on your Conformity.

Perhaps you have more time for reading and thinking than usual - or perhaps you don’t have the mental capacity to think about anything other than safety. Both are OK. These are strange times.

If you do find yourself looking for reading material, I wanted to share some books that are on my reading list:

  • Utopia for Realists by Rutger Bregman (2014)
  • Capital Is Dead. Is This Something Worse? by McKenzie Wark (2019)
  • Future Ethics by Cennydd Bowles (2018)
  • The Age of Surveillance Capitalism: The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power by Shoshana Zuboff (2019)
  • The Spirit Level: Why More Equal Societies Almost Always Do Better by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett (2009)

Have you read any of these? What else should I add to my list? Share your recommendations with me at director@bureauofconformity.us.

I can recommend the book that convinced me to head the Bureau of Conformity: How to Do Nothing by Jenny Odell. Odell is a powerful advocate for directing your attention with intention. Your attention is valuable - both to you and to corporations. Between you and them, who would you rather put in control?

Stay home, stay healthy, Conform.

Drake Starling
Director, Bureau of Conformity
