D&F 2025-09-01
The slow news summer is almost over. In the world of racing the Spanish cycling grand tour La Vuelta is midway through, and F1 is back from the summer break. Google and Apple announced or are about to announce new devices. Also if we're lucky the worst person alive might die soon!
It's hot in the bay this weekend, but I managed a bike ride on Saturday, and then spent Sunday resting and watching The Great North. The rest is nice, since I've got one race coming up soon, and I've booked everything for my annual Japanese bike tour. It's a long weekend in the states; one of the only good holidays. Whether you're chilling at a beach, going hiking, or doing some kind of cookout, enjoy your time with a side of links.
Links
- I don't know why free diving was on my mind this month since I'm not fond of oceans, and don't dive, but this story of an older woman discovering her world-class talent in going deep was rad. The idea of suddenly realizing I'm really good at something is up there with "a distant relative left me a lot of money after dying peacefully" or "find a secret extra room in my apartment" dream stuff.
- If you don't care for deep diving, maybe you'll enjoy this video of guys swimming very long distances with one breath. Aw, crap, that's free diving too.
- Donut is good again? The car boys started doing interesting road trips instead of just making little quizzes and Temu video, and this one is a trip across the US. Spoiler they find and adopt a puppy.
- Lately I've read two of the three Mars trilogy books by Kim Stanley Robinson, and recommend it, especially if you like somewhat political wonk sci-fi. At this point I've read most of his books, and he's both good at story building and delivering polemic gracefully. His books are a split between optimism, and realistic speculation—a mix that's hard to get right.
- I don't read a lot of manga, but this series by Naoki Urarsawa also rules: 20th Century Boys. The link describes it better than I can as "Doomsday cults, giant robots and a group of friends trying to save the world from destruction!"

Enjoy your long weekend, and do your best to avoid those Monday scaries—this is a short week so even a tough job will be easier. I'll keep my eyes peeled for more links for September—watch out for another edition of the newsletter by the end of the month. Stay hydrated, pet an animal, and bully a chatbot, space cowgirls~
