Brooklyn Web Workers #1 on August 25th

Hi friends! We’ve got our first event coming up on August 25th, 7-9 PM at Easy Lover in Williamsburg.

Here's a little bit about this month's presenters:

Jenn Schiffer - Hard wax, soft skills

In a tale as old as time, I left my job at a public enterprise tech company and became a professional candlemaker. Who could have guessed that the hard and soft skills of a modern tech job would carry over to a medieval era profession? Me. I did. And now I'm ready to not only share my story, but more importantly speak to your own potential.

Jia Jie Chen - Notatio: The Harmonics Behind Building a Music Card Strategy Game

Are you ready to make musical history? In this special Brooklyn Web Workers talk, Jia Jie Chen will discuss the behind-the-scenes work that went into developing Notatio. In this epic music card strategy game, play as a historical composer trying to defeat other composers through might and music in the quest to be number one.

Rachel White - Lesser known web APIs

Hamilton Nolan - The Labor Movement Can't Win Without Tech Workers

Organized labor can save us from fascism and oligarchy. But only if we can organize the most important industries. Tech is the most powerful industry in America, but it's almost totally union-free. You can change that.

All this, plus music by Mani Nilchiani!

Do you want to present at Brooklyn Web Workers? We're looking for talks that are 10-20 minutes long, geared towards an audience of software engineers, and maybe have a political angle.

Here are a few topics that we'd love to have knowledgeable people speak about:

  • Censorship & AI age verification

  • DIY HRT

  • Working on an H-1B / O-1 visa

  • Project Cybersyn

  • the stuff in "From Counterculture to Cyberculture"

We're also looking to make connections with activist groups that are doing in-person events in New York. A lot of tech workers donate to progressive causes, but we'd also like to get our bodies involved. We're particularly interested in events like:

  • training sessions for ICE observers / Copwatch

  • workplace organizer training

  • pickets, protests & marches

If any of this applies to you, please get in touch by replying to this email, or DM @brooklynwebworkers.com on Bluesky.
