I usually don’t have two flash stories in a row, but I just realized that this one has a book set in the same continuity that launches today! Be the Sea, from Atthis Arts (who also published one of the anthologies I edited, Rosalind’s Siblings). I actually got an advance copy of the book, but successfully misplaced it and just found it again a few days ago. In the meanwhile I read and loved this flash story, so now I want to get to the whole book even more.
“Dream the Sea” seems like it can be read entirely independently of the novel. It’s a piece about dreaming oneself into the shapes of various sea animals – and how this provides ecological insight. It’s beautifully written and the biological parts also fit with the form the story takes. I am a sea life enthusiast, but this has broader appeal even beyond that, I’d say.
Here are also my own associate purchase links for the book, as usual – Amazon US, Bookshop.org.
In the meanwhile I have NO idea how to link earlier issues of Asimov’s, does anyone know? I want to recommend a story from the immediately preceding issue, not the current one.
Take care,
Bogi.
