Have some soup - "My Mother Fears the Vampires" by Julia Yuxuan
BogiReads brings you the daily speculative reading recommendation of editor Bogi Takács.
Today's recommendation -
Author: Julia Yuxuan
Title: “My Mother Fears the Vampires”
Venue: Small Wonders, August 2023 (eds. Cislyn Smith, Stephen Granade)
Type: Poem – Under 50 lines
Themes: Fantasy, vampires, family, belonging, food
Where to read: Text free online
Also a poem about death and a funeral, like last week, but look how different! What happens if your mother fears vampires – but you, freshly undead, are still her beloved child? This could be played for crudeness, for the grotesque, but here it’s written with warmth and gentle humor.
I read a bunch of back issues of Small Wonders the other day, so there might be more recommendations :) This is a cool magazine and they post stories/poems frequently!
Until next time,
Bogi.
