Reference Ecosystem: Lost 40 Book Launch, Upcoming Exhibitions & Events, Studio Update!
Hello world!
Welcome to the first edition of my new email newsletter. I hope you're as excited about spring peeking around the corner as I am! Here in Minnesota we've had a record breaking winter of snow, and I've been busy in the studio working on a new film, electronics schematics, and a book! I'm happy to share a number of upcoming events and previews of new projects with you.
First off, I'm so excited to announce the release of my book Reference Ecosystem: Lost 40. There will be a release event at the Midway Contemporary Art Library in Minneapolis on April 15th, 3-5pm. I've been working on this project since 2020 and I really cannot wait to share the book with you!
Reference Ecosystem: Lost 40 contains a selected archive of images generated using an Artificial Intelligence Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), which has been trained using thousands of source photographs of Northern Minnesota’s Lost 40 Scientific and Natural Area. GAN generated image-based specters of the trees attempt to find a pathway to digitally re-grow the forest from what little present reference material remains. This gesture draws focus to the loss of old growth forest during Minnesota’s logging boom while placing the images in context of present-day climate crisis.
The book contains 75 plates and 3 wonderful essays by Kate Casanova, Morgan Erickson-Davis, and Everest Pipkin.

As part of my 2021 McKnight Fellowship, I will be participating in the McKnight Discussion Series with two very special people, Dyani White Hawk and Gregory Volk. The event will be at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. The event is free but ticketed, please reserve your tickets here
The Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) is pleased to present the McKnight Discussion Series featuring Gregory Volk, New York-based art critic and freelance curator, in conversation with McKnight 2021 fellows Ben Moren and Dyani White Hawk. This program pairs a visiting critic with three McKnight Visual Artist Fellows and offers attendees an opportunity to learn more about the fellowship recipients as well as how their work intersects with broader contemporary art ideas and concerns. This event is generously supported by the McKnight Foundation.
