day 159+160 : riding for rohan
Jamie here, this morning we officially checked out of Fiji and nervously waited at the fuel dock for it to open while surrounded by other impatient boats waiting for fuel. We were first in line tho it’s fair. With Magnus help we epoxied in the screws which hold the dodger in so it feels relatively secure at this point. We passed by cloudbreak on the way out and hit 25-30 knots of wind which left us all pretty quiet and rattled after a solid couple weeks of motoring around in calm conditions sucking on mangos. Now it’s real and it’s time for 2 minute noodles and sleep deprivation. We were somehow hustled out of our initial bio security payment back when we first arrived. It conveniently “got lost” when skipper took the money to the ROYAL SUVA YACHT CLUB RECEPTIONISTS. good to know who your friends are. So that’s why the beer was so cheap. This meant paying that bio security payment again this morning and grabbing a big old receipt. Matt bought some last minute yoghurt and honey as he is prone to do. Just after getting outside the reef of Fiji today the fishing rod went off very fast and I simply put the drag up to high and watched that line zizzout, knowing we’ve lost another one. It got all the way to the end of the spool where it’s tied to the rod. Snap. Gone. I’ve invested some time yesterday in making a hand line with braided line and a inner tube, a pretty solid rig. I set that up on the other side of the boat with the lure only 20m out. After a few hours of MIRIAMS shift I rose my face outside the boat for a wee. As I peered behind the boat to check on the hand line , hello, also snapped. Another big fish lost. It’s a shame the skipper wasn’t paying attention to the hand line as it would have been a spectacle to see a fish drag 20m behind the boat. Maybe tomorrow I’ll get the lines going again. We’re coming home. My PR team can’t help but notice a significant lack of support for WOD recently. A reassuring email here or there doesn’t go amiss WOD: adamant. Adamant - self assured and confident In one’s opinion, idea or arguement Used in a senny: hey your breath smells great, have you adamant?
