day 144: corned beef on mash

Miriam: We escaped! Finally Vuda Point is behind us and we are anchored out at Cloudbreak, a surf break in Malolo Pass. A morning of a few last errands and then off we went into some decent wind that soon dropped away to motoring. I had a nap. Jamie and Nao headed out to the break as soon as we anchored and I joined ostensibly to try surfing with an indestructible borrowed board made by Bic, better known for their pens. What really happened is that I sat in Mauruuru and watched everyone catch huge waves that looked entirely too intimidating for me before eventually swimming back to the boat. Such a relief to be back in clean water, I hadn’t had a swim in a week. Now for a deep night of sleep…

Naomi here What a relief to finally be out of vuda point, even an hour before we left I was still unbelieving that we would actually be leaving. But leave we did ! And had a blissfully uneventful sail/motor down to Cloudbreak, where it was a bit tricky to anchor as even in 20-30 foot depth we couldn’t see the bottom to scope a nice sandy patch to put the anchor. Never mind Jamie got in the water with snorkel gear to find us a good spot. And off we went for a beautiful sunset surf, all the different clouds in the sky and most of the colours… it was a decent double overhead (for me, only slightly overhead for other people) on the outside sets but I managed to pick off two insiders that were of extremely high quality and so worth the wait, really really fun. Narrowly avoided cold canned beef for dinner and now ready for sweet blissful sleep

Jamie here, great to get a surf after the vuda point purgatory. This morning Matt and I had a quick forage along the sugar cane train tracks and had great success. We escaped the hustle and bustle of the marina and got papaya and bananas next to the tracks using large sticks. Out to cloudbreak to get some amazing wipeouts and one pretty great wave! Tomorrow morning into it again with more knowledge and wisdom to try and catch some niiice waves. Bring on cruising again ! WOD: quartz. Quartz- a common mineral that makes up some crystals and rox. Used I a s: got my racquet and whites, gonna head down to the tennis quartz with Kane for a game.

Matt Quixote: Tilting with careless chivalry at a drifting chunk of styrofoam while at anchor at this reef I lost hold of the boat hook and had to jump in after it - thoroughly salted my last purely clean pair of pants but ended up a hero in my own mind. Styrofoam is still off on its own adventure
