day 121: chasing the sun

Jamie here, Today we continued sailing to Fiji. Thought about stopping off at a KFC on the way but thought we should save money. Made adventure bread and porridge. Painted my shell necklace with nail polish to remove its powers and save humankind just like Frodo did in WWI. We got a shower and had a quick galavant in the rain and it did wonders to wash off the salt. WOD - pliable. Pliable: a quality of something which is bendy or flexible Used in a senny: if you sign this contract it means you are pliable for any damage done to the car.

Naomi here, It kinda feels like it’s getting colder, how come? We aren’t really doing much of up or down we are just going straight across. We have come up with a fun new joke which is when you ask how someone’s slept last night and they say oh pretty good I did wake up in the night tho and man I just couldn’t get back to sleep, for like three hours it was the weirdest thing. It’s a funny joke because it’s actually your watch, is the time when you couldn’t get back to sleep. We will be testing this joke out in various forms and formats until we reach Fiji I believe. Today I found a bolt trying to escape from the mast plate that holds the gooseneck and the boom and all that, I went to the stylist for a little touch up on my new ‘do, then I put tape all over my face, and got a little bit closer to saving the earth in xcom 2 war of the chosen. Todays book was winter over which I didn’t think was very good, and todays menu has been, leftover pizza, delicious warm adventure bread with chutney and salami, and for dinner a fantastic lentil dhal with chutney.

Miriam here, I refined my stylist skills today, trimming both Jamie’s beard and Naomi’s hair. Although the standards are quite low and the clients very forgiving I think I did a decent job considering dull scissors and constant rocking. I then managed to get most of the hair and remaining chia out of the cockpit with many buckets of water hauled over the side. The rain shower was wonderful and has reminded me what salt free skin feels like. An amazing side effect of all the sheets, cloths, and pretty much every textile on board being at one point exposed to saltwater is that the salt somehow pulls moisture from the air and now everything is slightly damp. Which bothers me less than I would’ve thought it might; it’s all part of the journey.

Kia ora, Megan here. Today I took after Naomi and read most the day. I saw a sooty tern and the return of the mysterious new bird, who I’m thinking is likely some sort of storm petrel. Jamie assured us that if we just looked in the bird book, we’d be well equipped to identify the next bird that flies past us, as the identification guide includes key features one might notice. Apparently for petrels or maybe it was shearwaters… Jamie says their nostrils are a dead giveaway. So I suppose we’ll just have to hope the next mystery bird is a particularly friendly one.

The sky was covered in a thick blanket of black clouds tonight on my watch. Especially after so many nights with the moon a spotlight behind us, it was incredibly disorienting to only see… nothing. It felt quite like stumbling around a stranger’s house in the dark, trying to find the right door. Eventually I turned to look behind us and a set of lights appeared on the horizon, hazy and indefinite. It took me several moments to realise it was the moon barely peeking through a few gaps in the clouds, and not some sort of ghost ship. The sky opened up as my shift ended; I was so glad to see the stars. Pō mārie!
