February Peer Feedback & Ideas

Photo by Manki Kim on Unsplash

Hi there.

Welcome to Month 1 of Write Better Letters.

Starting in March, we’ll have live co-writing sessions the first week of each month. During co-writing, we’ll spend about an hour writing/working on newsletters, and an additional half-hour giving and receiving peer feedback.

In case you can’t attend live co-writing, there will also be the option to share a newsletter draft in the peer feedback thread each month.

🎊 Even though we are not having a co-writing session until next month, we are jumping right in with peer feedback this week. This is our first monthly peer feedback thread! Please don’t be afraid to test this out by posting your draft in the comments. 🎊

Rules for the monthly peer feedback thread:

To request feedback on your draft, comment on this post with a link to your draft (or, if it’s short, you can cut/paste your draft into the comment.) If you post a draft for feedback, please provide feedback for at least 2 other people. (You’ll need to be logged in to view this post online and comment.)

In addition to your draft, please share who you’re writing to (who are your people/clients?) and any specific questions you have for your peer reviewers.

Providing Feedback 💌

Be kind. Be thoughtful. Be constructive. Consider answering one or more of the following questions:

  • What did you find most engaging about this draft? Why?

  • How well does the newsletter reflect the author’s expertise in or passion for their field? Can you identify a section where this is particularly evident?

  • Are there any sections where you think additional information (or less information) might be helpful for readers?

  • How does the newsletter’s tone and style suit its intended audience? Is it approachable and reader-friendly? Does the author’s voice come through?

  • Can you suggest one way the writer might make their content more relatable or compelling?

  • Do you have other suggestions for improvement?

Lastly, here are a 3 newsletter topic ideas for this month:

  • Tell a story about your best or worst Valentine’s Day. (Remember, relate this back to your people and your work.)

  • It’s Black History Month. Review or lift up Black leaders/mentors in your field or share thoughts on the role of Black practitioners or healers in your own life/care/story.

  • This is a dark, cold month for many people. What are things you do or recommend to bring in the light or to embrace the darkness? How can you help people navigate this month with a bit more ease using your words?
