Chris’s Draft: Living with Hashi’s
Different Fasting Methods + Reversing Memory Loss How-To + Mexican Hot Chocolate
Hi & welcome to my first “Living With Hashi’s” newsletter! I’m excited to start this newsletter project.
Look to hear from me about twice a month. This issue will be longer than most, but in general I plan to keep these newsletters short, the topics will be listed in the subject line, links to more information can be found near the end. The main theme will be to offer resources on different ways you can improve your health; nutrition, herbalism, healthy aging and living with an autoimmune disease.
Though this newsletter is primarily about living with an autoimmune disease, I think you will find the topics are useful for anyone, especially if you are 55+ and interested in healthy aging.
Identifying and removing obstacles to our health is key to living with an autoimmune disorder. Developing a healthy mindset and putting yourself first can be obstacles of their own but are extremely valuable.
Following are two ideas that can help you develop that mindset and get you on the path to feeling better and looking out for yourself.
1) Invest time in Learning:
Spend some time learning, or identifying, the various obstacles to feeling better. I don’t mean just learning all you can about Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis as a condition (though that is also something that will certainly help you on your journey), instead, I mean identifying what body systems are affected by Hashi’s and what symptoms are common. I think you will find there are some very basic (and easy) healthy habits that can be incorporated into your daily routine to support your body systems and hopefully lessen the severity of your symptoms.
2) Make small changes to your diet or lifestyle:
Make it a priority to work toward making small changes. Start removing obstacles a little at a time. Pick a wellness habit that is do-able and stick with it daily for a few weeks and see how you feel.
If you can embrace the two ideas above, learning and making small changes, congratulate yourself, you may already have made significant progress to feeling better with just that mindset shift!
Removing obstacles to your health and adding daily wellness habits is up to you. Unfortunately I can’t do the actual work for you, but I can offer you the support you may need along the way.
Different Fasting Methods
One helpful habit I’ve found useful with Hashimoto’s has been intermittent fasting. In a nutshell, intermittent fasting is ‘not’ eating (or fasting) for a 12-16 hour window of time and then ‘eating’ during the remaining hours. An example might be 16 hours of not eating and then an 8 hour window where you enjoy your meals. Fasting allows your digestive system an extended period of rest and recovery. There are many forms of fasting, some better than others in my opinion. If you aren’t familiar with them you may find this article interesting.

Reversing Memory Loss How-To
As I’ve aged I’ve found memory loss one of the most troubling issues. Research has shown that too much sugar may be driving the cascade of memory loss. The following narrative is from Dr. Mark Hyman’s podcast, the Doctors Pharmacy, 12.8.23,

Mexican Hot Chocolate
And who doesn’t love a good cup of hot cocoa this time of year? I’m actually into hot chocolate made with raw cacao paste, herbal teas and dates (or stevia), but I’ll save that recipe for another newsletter, it’s a bit complicated. For now, enjoy this spicy version, hope you like it!

That’s all for the first issue of my newsletter, let me know what you think.
