One Small Light
So. Here we are.
In so many ways it is difficult being an artist in our late-stage capitalism world, and one of those is, even after horrific events have happened, we not only have to find a way to keep moving forward and making art, but we have to continue to ask for people’s time, attention, and money.
In the wake of the election, it feels strange to be writing this. It feels strange to be talking about writing, to be thinking about writing. To be engaging in this mundane work, as though the world is no different than it was two weeks ago.
And yet, we must find a way to continue. I don’t know what the larger world is going to look like, or how we are going to navigate it. But I do know I want to continue, as much as I am able, telling these stories that I love. I want to continue to celebrate with my friends. I want to be able to find small comforts where I can.
I hope that we can all continue to find those comforts, those joys. As the world grows darker, we must each carry our small lights and hold together against the night.
Moving on to the actual news for this newsletter:
That’s right—Twisted Magic is now in print. Moving forward, all the books in the series will have print versions alongside the ebook. I’m excited to share this, and also to be able to hold the book in my hand!
The print version should be available at all the retailers, so if you’ve been waiting for that, it’s there!
What I’m Playing
Like anyone else who is a fan of the series, I’m currently playing Dragonage:Veilguard. I haven’t gotten very far into it, but on balance I’m enjoying it.
I am one of the rare fans who hold up Dragonage:2 as my favorite in the series, and Veilguard has real DA:2 energy. It’s a delight hearing Varric’s voice again, and while I haven’t met all the new companions yet, I am finding the new friends I have encountered to be charming and engaging. I’m also loving the first hints I’m getting of answers to long-held mysteries and I’m excited for that.
I am less fond of the combat in this game. It feels clunky. If you’re going to have twitch combat, you really need the game to be twitch-responsive, and the engine is not. But ultimately, I’m here for the story, so I set the mode on easy to get through the fighting as fast as possible.
What I’m Reading
I am starting a new project. This is, in part, inspired by Kij Johnson and her last 1000 books thing, but also it’s a way to try to pull away from the internet and ground myself in something physical and crafty.
Basically, I have ordered a pretty notebook and I am going to be going through every book I own, reading (or re-reading) them, and documenting it. We recently put some new bookshelves up, getting the last of our book stragglers on the wall, and in the process culled out books that for various reasons we no longer wanted to keep, but that also reminded me of old favorites I haven’t touched in a while or ancient TBRs that I’m still interested in.
I’m not going to be posting about most of these. My thoughts, for the most part, will be between me and my notebook. But as I discover new gems, or am reminded of old favorites, I’ll share some of those here.
That’s it for me today! I hope everyone is doing as well as they can be, and I’ll talk to you again soon!
