The James Bond issue. Just kidding.
Welcome to the 007th collection of semi-random documents known as “Miscellaneous Materials”
Collection 007 is, well, all over the place. When I started this idea of “reading collections” — sending packages of documents out to the æther — I had this plan that as I found PDFs, texts, etc. that I could somehow remember and document when, where, how, why, etc. I had found and collected said files… have a narrative for each collection, for each file eve. Well, that's turned out to be totally not easy. Mainly because I just sort of search around and these files wind up on my desktop; in trying to clean things up Bam! a new collection is formed, but totally devoid of this extra meta data I was hoping to collect and be able to pass along to all of you. Perhaps I need to start using an are.na channel or similar to collect them, at least I might keep a little more tangential information. Perhaps the chaos and unknown is part of the charm.
There are some images from a Victor Papanek poster I am trying to track down: Big Character Poster No. 1 Work Chart For Designers. If anyone knows anything about this, please let me know. It was mentioned tangentially in some other reading that I can't find now but I really want to know more. The internet is little help regarding this piece.
I've been doing some thinking regarding ideas and frameworks for design classes and curriculum; mainly in regards to reconnecting to some ideals from the Bauhaus — like we've kept the formal structures from the Bauhaus, but we've abandoned all the ideology; how can we return to some of the useful ideologies, but explore new formal territories that better fit them in this time and space? I've also been considering what's presented in the context of a text like Wucius Wong's principles of 2D design: rules for formal relationships that provide context and standards for “good” visuals. How can we add things like energy consumption; carbon sequestration; etc. to extend the conversation around “formal beauty” to these other (perhaps more objectively measurable success wise) criteria?
There is of course a lot more, hopefully something for everyone. Enjoy. My email is open for response and conversation. If you wish this would lead to interconnection between members, let me know, I'll see what I can arrange.

Until the next collection.
