Birdsong: David P. Smith, March 27th
We’re pleased to welcome our favourite dadaist accordion-player David P. Smith back to Birdsong this month as our songwriter-in-residence. As part of his stay with us, he’ll be putting on a show on Friday, March 27th!
David P. Smith is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work moves freely between folk, blues, hillbilly, punk, spoken word, and experimental sound. Known for his dynamic live performances and fiercely original songwriting, he first emerged on the Victoria scene with the irreverent hillbilly-punk band The Dogbreath Brothers, and over the past two decades has released multiple recordings and led a wide range of musical projects that resist easy classification.
Drawing on traditional forms while twisting them into something new, his songs can be tragic, hilarious, profane, surreal, and occasionally profound. In addition to his original music, his projects have included The Songs of Hank Williams, the accordion-driven duo Accordion Heavy (with Ana Bon Bon), low-tech free-noise performances as Grampa Big Balls, and work in drawing, poster design, and photography.
