Big Trip Day 1: Live from Bangkok, It's Raw Crab!

Big Trip Day 1: Live from Bangkok, It's Raw Crab!

Good morning from Bangkok, Thailand, on the first complete day of Big Trip and the first official incidence of food poisoning! This photo is of Justin yesterday evening, hours after completing a 22 hour travel day, and moments before eating what turned out to be raw river crab. One very exciting evening in the bathroom later, he's recovering in bed with a Gatorade, and I'm writing our first official update of Big Trip!

As we've chatted with you, all our friends and family, in the lead up to our time abroad, you asked how to keep in touch while we're traveling. So we decided to launch this newsletter! We don't really know what these emails will look like — we've got no schedule and no particular vision here — so if you're excited about specific updates, let us know!

A few other ways to keep (virtually) in touch:

  • We've moved our US phone numbers Google Voice, and can get texts anytime we're on wifi! Both of our Whatsapps and Dory's iMessages will all work normally.
  • On Instagram, Justin is @sirfunkymonk and dory is @dorytrimble. We'll post pictures!
  • Dory's on Marco Polo (retro, I know) and would love to send you updates via a broadcast channel.
  • We're both on BeReal! @doryeliza and @sirfunkymonk.

In terms of plans, here's what we know: we're in Bangkok for the next five days, in which we'll hopefully encounter no further cursed crabs. Next week, we'll take an overnight bus to Laos, where we'll be staying at Green Climbers Home and sport climbing on tropical limestone. And we'll send an update from there once we have some more stories to tell!

Thanks for all your stoke and support in the weeks and months leading up to this adventure. We can only imagine what the next year has in store for us, but we're excited to keep in touch with you through it all.

Big hugs,
Dory (& Justin, who's currently asleep)
