Beyond the Big 5 Issue 12
covering nontraditional, emerging and niche sports with a focus on women and LGBTIQA+ people
Hello and good evening! The Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics are underway and I’ve got a few pieces to share with y’all.
What’s Out Now

Spotlight on Team USA Snowboarder Stacy Gaskill
Gaskill returns to her second Olympics in snowboard cross following an ACL tear in December 2024. She played ultimate in high school and college, earning roster spots on the U24 National Team, Denver Molly Brown, Colorado Quandary, and Utah Wild.
Funny story – I was in a pub last week chatting up a stranger about sports and mentioned a Team USA snowboarder I had been talking to (Gaskill). The stranger lowered his voice and asked reverently, “Are you a reporter?” Reader, I beamed.

Amid Growing Restrictions on Trans Athletes, Ultimate and Quadball Choose Inclusion

Announcing the Best “Beyond the Big 5” Dog of 2025
Callahan, a 12-year old Bernese mountain dog/Labrador retriever mix who loves ultimate frisbee, beat out 36 other competitors in the first year of this competition.
What’s Next
Stay tuned for rugby, quadball, and ultimate coverage this spring as I get back into covering games and tournaments on the ground. Also, I’m on Bluesky! Maybe I’ll get to the backlog of photos and articles from 2024 and 2025, like my currently shelved magnum opus on the 2025 IQA World Cup (the IQA, by the way, is still refusing to answer any questions of mine, about anything, yet they are okay using my photos in their promos! I shrug!).

A Horse Tries To Make It To The Super Bowl by Sydney Bauer at Aftermath

A Newbie's Guide to Ice Hockey at the 2026 Olympics by Gavia Baker-Whitelaw at Overinvested
I love the podcast Overinvested, which is about pop culture obsessions, mostly film and TV ones. One of the co-hosts is an avid hockey fan and wrote a guide for the Olympics.
Uganda's Quidditch players with global dreams from France24
John Ssentamu’s quadball program in Uganda has made the global news again! I’d love to see his team at the 2027 World Cup…
Sliding on Ice from Ken Childs
Ken Childs is a sliding sports aficionado and reading his coverage of the Olympics has been a treat. He seems to know everyone, like in this 2023 profile of 2026 bronze medalist Ashley Farquharson.
In Closing
Here comes the sun… kinda! Sunsets in the PNW are finally happening at 5:30 p.m. and my mood is much better as a result.
