You can buy a house on Facebook Marketplace?
the true crime that's worth your time
As always, you folks were right. In Friday’s “what true crime we’re consuming this weekend” section, I said I’d be dipping into Netflix’s newly-released Missing: Dead or Alive? Readers quickly chimed in to say that the four-ep series worked best as a spite watch, and after watching the first installment, I am inclined to agree.
The episode, on the disappearance of Lorraine Garcia (I won’t spoil it if you haven’t watched and plan to, but let’s just say I hollered “for Pete’s sake y’all” when the truth was revealed), got my full attention as it was my treadmill viewing this weekend. And, sure, I was entertained — but it was, as others noted, very cheesy and not good, even though strange quirks like a guy seemingly selling his mom’s house through Facebook Marketplace (!?!) made me wish one of you were on the treadmill next to me to commiserate.
After watching that episode, and a chunk of the next, I was left wishing I was watching a better show about disappearances. M:DoA? had giving me a hankering for the missing, but the dish served to me by M:DoA? wasn’t scratching that itch.
So, I turn to all of you. What’s your gold standard for a true-crime property about a mysterious disappearance? And, while I have you, if YOU disappeared (god forbid) what show or true crime scribe/podcaster/property do you want covering your case? — EB
