We need a new term for "true-crime fan"
the true crime that's worth your time
Lexicographers, assemble — because calling ourselves/others “fans” of true crime doesn’t sit right. Not that it isn’t sometimes apropos, but for the same reason I make a distinction between reviewing true crime (which we do not do; crime is not getting five stars around here) and reviewing true-crime properties, I really think we need a more precise, less Beatlemania-adjacent term for our interest in/knowledge of the genre.
“Crimoir” isn’t my favorite of my coinages, but it does seem to get the job done without requiring further explanation, so I’ve learned to live with it. This one’s proving harder to crack, and “consumers” is a bit dry. “True-crime buff” doesn’t quite work; “Murderinos” is, to me and Eve, not acceptable either, and not because it’s probably trademarked out the wazoo — it’s too flip, too cutesy. I will not name
Maybe a play on “aficionado” or “enthusiast”? “True-crimoisseur”? “Genre scholar”? Help us out here. — SDB
