the true crime that's worth your time
Welcome back to what’s become an annual tradition here at Best Evidence — a dive into the Mystery Writers of America’s Edgar Award Fact Crime nominees. Are any of the 2023 nominees worth adding to your reading list?
We continue our look at the nominees with Tell Me Everything: The Story of a Private Investigation by Erika Krouse1.
In the early 2000s, while living in an unnamed mountain university town (enough context clues let the reader know it’s Boulder, Colorado), Krouse is working temp jobs when a chance encounter with an attorney — known as Grayson — leads to a gig as a private investigator. Krouse has an innate ability to earn trust quickly and get people talking. That’s exactly the skill set Grayson needs as he undertakes a Title IX claim against the university (also unnamed, but clearly the University of Colorado) and its football program for rampant sexual harassment and abuse. As a survivor of sexual violence herself, Krouse brings her own experience to her role as investigator.
