The terms by which the thing is understood: Zodiac Killer Project
the true crime that's worth your time
The crime
The Zodiac killings.

The story
Filmmaker Charlie Shackleton didn't set out to make a meta commentary on the way true crime is packaged and assembled; he set out to package and assemble his own documentary about ex-cop Lyndon Lafferty's obscure Zodiac investigation, The Zodiac Killer Cover-Up.
But negotiations for the rights to Lafferty's work fell through, so Shackleton made a documentary detailing the film he would have made – and in doing so, about how all the other true-crime films and serieses are made, and are in (repetitive, predictable) conversation with each other.
