On May 30, 2020, in the wake of the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police, protestors took to the streets in Omaha’s Old Market District. There, white bar owner and Marine veteran Jake Gardner and black protestor and father James Scurlock had an altercation. Gardner brought guns to his bar that night to stand “fire watch” during the protests, and when the two men clashed, Scurlock was shot and killed.
