Plus: A crime writer's personal crime tale
the true crime that's worth your time
I know, I know, you’re Epsteined out. I am, too: the unending stream of vile acts that went unremarked on or punished was enough to make me delete 3-5 of the 66964183 Jeffrey Epstein-related podcasts on my subscription list. But what if I told you that there’s a new angle on the sex-offending financier’s past…one that suggests that he helped kill off one of my generation’s shopping-mall favorites? May I suck you into the yarn with the promise of fast fashion?
I’m talking about The Mogul and the Monster, a longread in this month’s Vanity Fair that I almost skipped over because I assumed it was about some Wall Street guy who is also living unscathed after some Epstein-adjacent partying, a story I was so uninterested in that I didn’t fully absorb Sarah’s earlier mention of the piece. But an important phrase caught my eye as I prepared to turn the page: The Limited, the now-defunct mall standby that I was too poor to shop at when it was cool, and too cool to shop at when I could afford it. (That’s right, I made my own stirrup pants in the ’80s, AMA.)
