Tell us your true-crime landmarks
the true crime that's worth your time
This morning I walked down a street in Indianapolis (I’m visiting family) and ran into a friend I haven’t seen since the 1990s, when I was a regular at the bars up and down that same street. My old pal, who I danced many a night away with, told me that he is now a bartender at an upscale cocktail spot in the place where we used to shake our asses to Snap! and CeCe Peniston. I said something dumb about how I missed our old bar (I don’t, even! It was just something to say) but time marches on, etc., and he said “well, after the murders, probably good they closed.” And I remembered.
Our old bar was once the hunting grounds of Herb Baumeister, the Fox Hollow Farm killer, who was active during exactly those same years my friend and I were doing our thing. It’s quite likely we were there the same night Baumeister was on more than one occasion! Even though the bar’s facade is now quite different, it’s something I’ll think about every time I pass that spot.
Sarah told me she has a similar sensation at an address on her way to her shop — I’ll let her add it in the thread. It reminds me that we all have true-crime landmarks in our neighborhoods and cities, spots that give us pause (or even a chill) as we pass. What’s yours? — EB
