And a great and terrible British documentary

the true crime that's worth your time

The crime
In late October of 2019, truck driver Maurice Robinson called 999 to report finding dozens of dead bodies in the trailer of his refrigerated semi — 39 Vietnamese nationals, trying to find work in the UK. Robinson’s shifty behavior at the scene indicated to authorities that this tragic discovery was not as surprising as he initially made it out…before he decided to stop talking on solicitor’s advice.

The story
Just based on the title, I did not expect much from one-hour UK documentary Hunting The Essex Lorry Killers, which premiered on Topic late last week. I wasn’t familiar with the case, ergo I didn’t know that naming the project thusly was not in fact lurid tabloid-y click-chasing, but rather as straightforward and un-sensationalist as the production could manage under the circumstances. And those circumstances are utterly, utterly dispiriting.

A rendering of the Essex lorry crime scene. (Topic)
