October Bonus Review: Tread
A small town, a sad man, and the darkness at the center of town
the true crime that's worth your time
The crime
Years of perceived slights accumulated for retired airman and expert solderer Marvin Heemeyer — zoning problems; easement battles; the sorts of relatably infuriating small-business/homeowner hassle hoops those of us on the outside of the power structure try to jump through and not get stuck. Heemeyer, swollen with resentment, got stuck. Then he decided to get even.
Fortifying an already massive bulldozer with concrete walls and armed sallyports, Heemeyer…well, a rampage to me implies top speeds higher than 15 mph, but the point is that on June 4, 2004 Heemeyer targeted every building containing his enemies in the small town of Granby, CO…until even the architecture of a local store seemed to conspire against him.
